The ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine’s (ACMGF) Summer Genetic Scholars program (SGSP) is now accepting applications from institutions interested in hosting a Summer Scholar. Click HERE to apply now through October 20, 2023. We are encouraging applications from all institutions, including those who have not hosted a scholar in the past. The Foundation is extremely grateful to BioMarin and Ultragenyx whose support of this program allowed 15 students to participate in the summer of 2023.

The Summer Genetic Scholars program is a popular Foundation program that allows students who have completed their first year of medical school to work directly with a medical geneticist mentor. The six-week program educates future physicians about medical genetics and genomics in a “real world” setting and thanks to support from BioMarin and Ultragenyx, participating students receive a stipend.

SGSP was started in 2011 and has sponsored almost 175 scholars at more than 30 different institutions around the country since then. This program has a lasting impact on participants.

Institution Selection

  • Institutions will be selected by the Summer Genetics Scholars Committee.
  • Selection is made based on the applicant institution’s and ability to adequately provide support and resources to a Summer Genetics Scholar.
  • Institutions must apply on an annual basis for consideration for the program.

Qualifications of Student Applicants

In order to apply for the Summer Genetics Scholars program, applicants must:

  • be enrolled in a medical school in the US and in good standing at the time of the application.
  • have completed their first year of medical school.
Applicants who have completed more than the first year of medical school are not eligible to apply for the program.

Student Selection

Institutions selected to serve as a host site are responsible for selecting one Summer Genetics Scholar. Mentors will be required to notify the student and ACMGF staff of the student’s selection. All copies of the application must be sent to the ACMG for record-keeping and reimbursements purposes.
