Bruce R. Korf, MD, PhD is Named President of the American College of Medical Genetics
Six New Board of Directors Members Also Appointed and Three Elected to New Posts
BETHESDA, MD – APRIL 14, 2009 | Bruce R. Korf, MD, PhD, FACMG, of Birmingham, AL is the new president of The American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG), the national professional organization for medical genetics professionals. Dr. Korf takes over from outgoing President Joe Leigh Simpson, MD, FACMG, of Miami, FL who completed his two-year term at the 2009 Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting in Tampa, Florida in late March.
"It is a great honor to be elected to this position. The genomics era in medicine is in full swing, and the possibilities for improvement of health through integration of genetics into medical practice are practically limitless. I look forward to working with the board, staff, and membership of the ACMG in making the most of these opportunities," said Dr. Korf.
Dr. Korf, a renowned and accomplished geneticist, received his M.D. degree from Cornell University Medical College and his Ph.D. degree in genetics and cell biology from Rockefeller University. He then completed training in pediatrics, pediatric neurology, and genetics at Children’s Hospital, Boston. He served as clinical director in the Division of Genetics at Children’s Hospital from 1986 to 1999 and as the medical director of the Harvard-Partners Center for Genetics and Genomics from 1999-2002. Currently he is the Wayne H. and Sara Crews Finley Professor of Medical Genetics and Chairman, Department of Genetics and Director, Heflin Center for Human Genetics at University of Alabama at Birmingham. His book, Human Genetics: A Problem-Based Approach is currently in its third edition. He is also co-author of Medical Genetics at a Glance, co-editor of the fifth edition of Emery and Rimoin’s Principles and Practice of Medical Genetics, and co-editor of Current Protocols in Human Genetics. He has completed terms as president of the Association of Professors of Human and Medical Genetics, member of the boards of directors of the American College of Medical Genetics and the American Society of Human Genetics, member of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Counselors.
