Applications for the 2017 Summer Genetics Scholars Program are now available.

STUDENT DEADLINE: January 27, 2017
INSTITUTION DEADLINE: December 28, 2016

The purpose of the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine Summer Genetics Scholars program is to identify and encourage highly qualified medical students to consider careers in medical genetics by providing hands-on experience of the exciting variety of opportunities—clinical and laboratory medicine, research, and services—available in medical genetics.

Students choose leading participating medical genetics institutions, approved by ACMG, for a 6 week period during the Summer between their first and second years of medical school, to work under the direct supervision of experienced medical geneticists. Each student receives a stipend of $420 per 40 hour work week for this period with a maximum amount of $2520. The Principal Mentor must be a ACMG member.

Institution Selection

  • Institutions are selected by the Summer Genetics Scholars Committee. Selection is made based on the institution application and ability to adequately provide support and resources to their student scholar.

  • Feedback suggests alterations and improvements to the program regarding the role of mentors and institutions. Therefore, we are asking that those institutions that participated last year
    re-apply
    for 2017.

Qualification of Student Applicants

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a medical school in the US and in good standing at the time of the application.

  • Applicants must have completed their first year of medical school. Applicants who have completed more than their first year of medical school are not eligible.

Student Selection

Participating Institutions are responsible for selecting one Summer Genetics Scholar. Mentors will be required to notify the student and Summer Genetics Scholar Coordinator of their selection. All copies of the application must be sent to the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine Summer Genetics Scholar Coordinator for record-keeping and reimbursements.

Questions can be directed to the Summer Genetics Scholars Program Coordinator. If you have any questions about the specific projects, requirements or qualifications of the institution, you are encouraged to contact the medical genetics unit directly at any time during the application process.

Questions and copies of student applications may be directed to the ACMG Summer Scholars Coordinator:
