 | A Message from R. Rodney Howell, MD, FACMG, Foundation President | | The human genome, and the knowledge that will be derived from its sequencing, will improve the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease for the benefit of humankind. Vast resources of time, expertise, and funds have been invested not only in researching the science, but also the complex ethical, legal and social implications of this major step forward in our understanding of human health. The challenge remains, and it is a significant one, to translate this enormous body of information into safe and effective treatments and tests. Join us in our endeavor to translate genes into health. | Double your Gift and Put Your Job to Work Most large companies sponsor matching gift programs that supplement their employees' charitable donations. | Foundation Development Committee names C. Scott Palubiak, Chair During this important time of rapid growth, the members of the ACMG Foundation Development Committee asked Mr. Scott Palubiak, member of the ACMG Foundation Board and Vice President at PerkinElmer, to serve as Chairman. As Chair, Mr. Palubiak follows in the footsteps of Dr. Richard King, the Development Committee's first chair, who recently retired. Mr. Palubiak joined the ACMG Foundation Board of Directors in 2007. This is an exciting time for both the Development Committee and the ACMG Foundation because they are writing the first full-length and comprehensive fundraising strategic plan and rewriting the Foundation's mission and vision statements. "Scott's business, marketing, and management expertise provides the insight and foresight the Development Committee will use to propel the Foundation and our fundraising for the next half-decade," said David Cotter, ACMG Foundation Director of Development. Mr. Palubiak, Vice President of Newborn Screening and Child Health for the genetic screening business unit of PerkinElmer, Inc., joined the company in 1990 after holding several senior level sales and marketing positions with multinational corporations and venture capital backed start-ups. Among his most notable achievements, Mr. Palubiak is recognized for leading a highly effective lobbying campaign at both the state and federal level for the expansion of newborn screening. This effort also contributed to the successful passage of the Children's Healthcare Act of 2000, signed by President Clinton. Creative Ways to Support the Future of Medical Genetics There are many creative ways to support the American College of Medical Genetics Foundation and the future of medical genetics. Along from gifts of cash, appreciated stock, and real estate, you can also support the ACMG Foundation by donating your honoraria and through your company’s matching gift program. The ACMG Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is a community of supporters and contributors who understand the importance of medical genetics in healthcare, and the Foundation supports the American College of Medical Genetics’ mission to "translate genes into health." | | |
